Justice
No freeman shall be taken, or imprisoned, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any way harmed, nor will we go upon him nor will we send upon him, except by the legal judgment of his peers or by the law of the land. (Magna Carta, Clause 39, 1215)
The District Attorney’s #1 job is to see that justice is done. Justice for the victim. Justice for the community. And, yes, even justice for the criminal. As your District Attorney, the pursuit of justice will be the office’s touchstone and philosophy. The laws will determine all decisions about who to prosecute, what to prosecute, and how to prosecute. Justice dictates that the District Attorney will engage only in what is right for the community and the people his office serves.
We need this change.
Ethics
As the chief law enforcement officer in our community, the District Attorney has unmatched powers to charge people with crimes, to gain access to people’s homes and personal belongings, and to tear away their liberty. These powers must be wielded by someone who will follow our law and follow the rules in all of their professional legal decisions. We deserve a District Attorney who will avoid an “ends justifies the means” approach to prosecution.
We need this change.
Fiscal Responsibility
The efficient use of our tax money is the responsibility of every elected official. Fiscal responsibility means making the most of every dollar entrusted to the D.A.’s office by the people who voted them in to this office. True fiscal responsibility is to seek the resources necessary to hire and train the quality prosecutors our community deserves.
It is fiscally responsible for a District Attorney to appropriately staff the D.A.’s office and keep good people and avoid any behavior that can be deemed unethical and prejudicial to the administration of justice” by anyone, let alone the Colorado Supreme Court.
We need this change.
Personal responsibility
Personal responsibility of every person in the District Attorney’s office is the building block for the entire criminal justice system. We expect it from each other in our daily lives. We expect it from those who choose to violate our laws. In many criminal cases, the District Attorney is required to force responsibility upon those who will not willingly accept it. Republicans are the party of personal responsibility, not the party of excuses. We deserve a District Attorney who will take full responsibility for their own conduct. We must move past the old politics of elected officials who blame every criticism on a vast left wing conspiracy by the press, the judges, criminal defense attorneys, the Supreme Court…by everybody and anybody.
That sounds like “politics as usual.”
We need this change
Prosecution, not Politics
We deserve a District Attorney who will:
- focus on holding ALL criminals accountable for their conduct, especially those who pose the greatest threat to our safety and the safety of our families. We need to do more than trying to look “tough on crime” by seeking criminal charges which will make the biggest splash in the press.
- provide the leadership and training necessary to make our D.A.’s office the best in Colorado.
- make serving our community the number one priority, not appeasing partisan political interests.
- view the police and sheriff deputies in our community as our partners on the front line in our battle against crime. One cannot function without the other in a just society. A District Attorney’s office which has lost the trust of law enforcement is bad for our community and our families.
- use the broad powers of the government with discretion and sound judgment to protect everyone.
- be smart on crime, not just tough on crime.
